Third-party plan (C1): the mandatory minimum cover
The third-party plan is the minimum cover required by law as soon as you own a vehicle. It rests on civil liability, which covers the bodily injury, property damage and consequential losses you might cause to others with your car. In practical terms, if you hit someone else’s vehicle or damage a neighbour’s wall, Allianz compensates the victim on your behalf, but not your own vehicle.
That said, Allianz’s third-party car insurance goes beyond the bare minimum: it also includes the defence of your interests following an accident, driver protection that covers you personally, and assistance. It’s the ideal solution for a second-hand city car, a second vehicle or a low-value car.
Intermediate plan (C2): the right balance
The intermediate plan, often called extended third-party, keeps every guarantee from the third-party cover and adds reinforced protection for your own vehicle. You’re then covered for windscreen damage, theft and attempted theft, fire and forces of nature, natural and technological disasters, along with cover for attacks and acts of terrorism.
It’s the perfect middle ground for a recent saloon or city car you want to shield more effectively against life’s mishaps, without going all the way to comprehensive cover. You gain peace of mind while keeping your car insurance premium under control.
Comprehensive plan (C3): maximum protection
The comprehensive plan gives you the most complete cover on the market. On top of all the previous guarantees, it includes all-accident damage cover: Allianz covers the damage sustained by your vehicle in an accident, whether you’re at fault or not, but also in the event of a collision with an obstacle, a rollover or vandalism.
This plan is strongly recommended for a new vehicle, a high-end saloon, a recent model or a car financed through a loan or lease. With comprehensive cover, you’re compensated whether the damage comes from an accident, theft, a hailstorm or a malicious act. It’s complete peace of mind.
Worth knowing: the comprehensive plan can be reinforced with the Value Plus Pack, which limits your vehicle’s depreciation in the event of a total loss, and with the Contents option, which protects the belongings you carry inside.

FAQ: everything you need to know about car insurance in France
Find the answers to the questions you ask most often.
How do you get your car insurance quote?
Getting a car insurance quote with Allianz is simple, fast and no-obligation. In just a few steps, you receive a personalised motor insurance rate and choose the level of protection that suits you.
- Describe your vehicle: city car, saloon, estate, SUV, van, truck or licence-free vehicle, specifying its date of first registration and its engine type.
- Enter your profile: main driver, driving history, no-claims bonus, personal or professional use and estimated annual mileage.
- Choose your plan: third-party, intermediate or comprehensive, then round it out with the Mobility Packs, the Value Plus Pack and the options that matter to you.
- Receive your quote: clear, detailed and matched to your situation, ready to confirm online or with the help of an Allianz adviser.
You can change your contract at any time and, thanks to mid-term cancellation, switch car insurance easily after one year of commitment. Your new insurer can even take care of the paperwork for you.
How much does Allianz car insurance cost?
To choose your car insurance wisely, it helps to understand the three mechanisms that shape your premium and your payout: the excess, the bonus-malus coefficient and how the premium is calculated.
Which car insurance plan should you choose?
It all comes down to your car’s value and age, along with how you use it. For an older or low-value vehicle, third-party cover is often enough. For a recent car, the intermediate plan brings reinforced protection against theft, fire and windscreen damage. For a new, high-end vehicle, or one financed through a loan or lease, the comprehensive plan remains the best fit.
Is car insurance mandatory in France?
Yes. In France, civil liability, meaning third-party insurance, is compulsory for any motorised land vehicle, even one that never moves and stays parked. It covers the damage you might cause to others. The other guarantees, such as theft, fire or all-accident damage, remain optional but are strongly recommended.
Can I insure a van or a licence-free car with Allianz?
Yes. Allianz offers insurance solutions for a wide range of vehicles: city car, saloon, estate, SUV, people carrier, truck, van, electric or hybrid vehicle, as well as licence-free cars. Every contract is tailored to the usage, the value and the driver’s profile.
What does Allianz assistance cover in the event of a breakdown or accident?
Assistance arranges the roadside repair and towing of your vehicle and, depending on your contract, a hotel stay, the continuation of your journey or a replacement vehicle. The notion of breakdown also covers a puncture, wrong fuel, a flat battery, lost keys or keys locked inside the vehicle.
What is the Excellence Auto 2026 label?
The Excellence Auto label is an independent distinction that rewards the quality of the guarantees, service and support behind the Allianz car insurance offer. It reflects Allianz’s commitment to providing its policyholders with reliable, high-performing and recognised protection.
How does the replacement vehicle work?
With a Mobility Pack, Allianz provides you with a replacement vehicle in a category equivalent to your own while your car is off the road, for up to 30 days depending on the covered event and the plan you’ve taken out, so you can keep getting around without interruption.
Can I cancel my car insurance easily?
Yes. After one year of commitment, you can cancel your car insurance at any time, with no fees or penalties, thanks to mid-term cancellation. Your new insurer can even handle the process on your behalf to ensure your cover carries on without a break.
Is the bonus-malus kept if I change vehicle or insurer?
Yes. Your no-claims coefficient, or bonus-malus, transfers automatically when you replace your vehicle or acquire an additional one, provided the main driver stays the same. That way you keep the benefit of your claim-free years.
If you switch insurer, the bonus-malus carries over as well.
Do you accept drivers with a malus or a cancelled policy?
Yes. At Allianz, a malus or a cancellation by a previous insurer doesn’t close the door to new car insurance. Your situation is reviewed case by case, taking into account your profile, your vehicle and your driving history, so we can offer you a suitable plan and a rate matched to your reality.
It’s worth knowing that a malus isn’t permanent. For every year of insurance without an at-fault accident, your bonus-malus coefficient automatically drops by 5%, meaning it’s multiplied by 0.95. In practical terms, a driver with a malus sees their situation improve steadily as soon as they stop reporting at-fault claims. For example, a coefficient of 1.12 comes down to around 1.06 after one year, then to 1.00 after two years, and so on until it dips below the bonus threshold.
Two rules reinforce this recovery further: after two consecutive years without a claim, your coefficient can no longer exceed 1, which lifts you out of the malus. And the minimum coefficient, the maximum bonus, is capped at 0.50, meaning a 50% reduction on your reference premium. These rules are set by the French Insurance Code and apply the same way across all insurers.
Whether your coefficient is high today or your previous contract was cancelled, our priority is to find a solution that keeps you insured and lets you rebuild your bonus over time. The simplest approach is to request a personalised car insurance quote: you’ll then know the guarantees and the rate offered based on your situation.
Would I be covered by an Allianz France policy in the United Kingdom?
Yes. With our Allianz car insurance policies, you’re covered for your trips back and forth between France and the United Kingdom.
The guarantees apply in mainland France and in every other member country of the European Economic Area (that is, the European Union plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway). The contract also covers a list of countries outside the EEA, among them Switzerland, Andorra, Monaco, San Marino, the Vatican, as well as Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, North Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Moldova, Ukraine and Morocco.
Worth knowing: the cover applies to personal and professional trips not exceeding 90 consecutive days abroad. Beyond that, you’re no longer covered.
Allianz car insurance explained
Behind every plan lie specific guarantees. Understanding what they actually cover lets you choose your car insurance with full confidence. Here’s the essential to keep in mind.
Civil liability
Compulsory, it financially covers the bodily injury, property damage or consequential losses you cause to others in an accident involving your vehicle. If you scrape your neighbour’s gate, for instance, Allianz covers the repair costs, minus any applicable excess. This guarantee also covers your vehicle’s passengers and applies even when the vehicle is used as a work tool.
- Bodily injury: no cap on the amount
- Property damage and consequential losses: €100,000,000
Defence of your interests following an accident
In the event of a road accident, Allianz handles your civil defence before all courts and pursues your claim when you suffer damage attributable to a third party. You’re informed of your rights, advised and supported through every step, whether amicable or judicial, needed to obtain compensation for your loss.
Driver protection
Often overlooked, this guarantee is nonetheless essential. It compensates you, or your beneficiaries, for the costs linked to your injuries or death following a road accident, even when you’re at fault. Loss of earnings, medical expenses not covered by social security or your health top-up: you’re protected. It also applies when you drive a rented or borrowed vehicle.
Assistance
In the event of a breakdown, accident, theft or bad weather, our assistance arranges roadside repair, towing, a hotel stay or the continuation of your journey. Depending on your contract, you benefit from 0 km breakdown cover and a replacement vehicle. The notion of breakdown also covers a puncture, wrong fuel, a flat battery, lost keys or keys locked inside the vehicle. A real relief when the unexpected strikes.
Windscreen damage
A chip on the windscreen, a shattered side window, a cracked sunroof? Windscreen cover pays for the repair or replacement of the glazed parts of your cabin, whatever the cause. It’s strongly advised to fix a small chip as quickly as possible, before it turns into a crack and forces a full windscreen replacement.
Theft and attempted theft
This guarantee covers the loss, destruction or deterioration of your vehicle following a theft or an attempted theft marked by signs of forced entry. Remember to file a police report within 24 hours and to declare the claim quickly. Beware: leaving the keys in the vehicle can reduce your payout.
Fire and forces of nature
It compensates the damage sustained by your vehicle following a fire or an explosion, but also a storm, a hurricane, hail, lightning, flooding or an avalanche, when these events aren’t officially recognised as natural disasters. Essential protection in the face of increasingly frequent weather hazards.
Natural and technological disasters
These guarantees, granted automatically as soon as you hold at least one damage cover, protect your vehicle in the event of an occurrence recognised by interministerial decree: major flooding, drought, land movement or a large-scale technological accident.
All-accident damage
Exclusive to the comprehensive plan, this guarantee covers the material damage sustained by your vehicle in a collision with another vehicle, an impact with a fixed or moving object such as a tree or a pedestrian, a rollover with no prior collision or an act of vandalism, whether you’re at fault or not. It’s the heart of comprehensive protection.
Excess, bonus-malus and premium: what you need to grasp
Before settling on your car insurance, it pays to get to grips with the three levers that drive both your premium and your payout: the excess, the reduction-increase coefficient and the way the premium itself is worked out.
How does the excess work?
The excess is the portion of a claim that stays on your shoulders once the settlement is made. The kind of damage your vehicle suffers, whether a glass breakage, a fire or a collision, together with the driver’s profile, dictates which types of excess your contract applies. When an accident happens, your chosen plan and your degree of liability set the sum you’re left to fund. Going for a higher excess can bring your premium down, though it means a bigger bill out of pocket whenever a claim arises.
The bonus-malus (reduction-increase coefficient)
The bonus-malus system rewards cautious drivers and penalises at-fault claims. Each year that passes without an at-fault accident shaves 5% off your coefficient, down to a floor of 0.50, that is a 50% cut on your reference premium. On the flip side, every at-fault claim pushes your coefficient up by 25%.
Worth noting: the bonus you’ve earned moves across automatically when you swap vehicles or take on an extra one, as long as the main driver doesn’t change.
How is your premium worked out?
Your car insurance premium is built from what you declare and the guarantees you pick. A number of factors feed into it: the vehicle’s type and power, where it’s driven or parked, whether your use is personal or professional, your yearly mileage, your driving record and your bonus-malus coefficient. This is exactly why the surest way to learn your rate is to ask for a personalised car insurance quote.
The mileage reserve
If, by the end of the insurance period, you haven’t driven the full mileage set out in your contract, the leftover kilometres are kept and rolled over automatically to the following year. That said, the carried-over total is capped at a maximum of 5,000 km.
The available mileage packages are:
- unlimited package
- 4,000 km per year
- 7,000 km per year
- 9,000 km per year
Strengthen your contract with Allianz Packs and options
Beyond the core guarantees, your car insurance can be enriched with Packs and options that bring a real boost in comfort, mobility and security. Here are the most useful add-ons.
The Allianz Mobility Packs
With the Classic Mobility Pack or the Mobility Plus Pack, you benefit from 0 km breakdown cover, with no distance-from-home excess, and a replacement vehicle while your car is off the road. It can be made available for up to 30 days depending on the covered event and the plan you’ve chosen. This way you carry on with your work and personal journeys without interruption, even in the event of a breakdown, accident or theft.
The Allianz Value Plus Pack
A vehicle starts losing value the moment it’s registered. The Value Plus Pack limits this depreciation in the event of a total loss: you’re compensated at your vehicle’s purchase price for 24 months (or 36 months depending on your contract), then at the assessed expert value increased by 20 to 40% according to the vehicle’s age, with a guaranteed minimum payout of €3,000. It’s valuable protection for a recent or financed vehicle.
The additional options
- Contents option: compensates your personal belongings, luggage and leisure equipment carried in the vehicle, as well as professional gear such as a suitcase or a computer, in the event of theft or damage.
- Equipment option: covers trim or functional fittings attached to the vehicle after it left the factory, including professional adaptations.
- Motor legal protection: a legal information service and the handling of disputes linked to buying, selling or repairing your vehicle, including automotive cyber-risks such as data hacking or the failure of an electronic guidance system.
- Licence protection: a taxi ride home when you’re not fit to drive, and coverage of a points-recovery course to safeguard your driving licence.
